Training Wheels
When should a kid's training wheels come off?
My daughter is 4 1/2.
A best answer will NOT say "when she's ready." I know that. I'm not asking her to compete in the Tour de France.
I'm looking for practical tips, and a sense of when it is reasonable to encourage her to try without the training wheels.
It totally varies by child, that much is true. For my son, we waited until he asked to take them off. I would start off by asking your daughter if she wants to try it. If she's agreeable, then I would take them off, and then just try having her scoot around with her feet on the ground while on the bike - it helps them learn to balance. then you can go the whole nine yards of holding the bike while she starts off and then letting go. If she gets too scared or nervous and is not liking it after a period of time, you can always put the training wheels back on and try again later. Oh, and its best to try on a bike thats on the smaller side for her - its easier for them then. She should be able to place both feet flat on the ground while seated on the seat. I made the mistake of buying my son a larger bike then trying to teach him to ride without training wheels, and he was a nervous wreck and it took him much longer to get the hang of it.
I think 4 1/2 is reasonable to give it a shot if she's willing. From what I've seen so far the average age is around 5 anyways.
