Ten Bike
What would you pay for a BMX bike for a ten year old? Would you pay $500?
His parents are arguing how much. His mom says 300, his dad says 500. He wants a bike that is 550. It is a BMX, so they cost more, but how much should he get for his bike. And which parent do you agree with?
The most expensive BMX bikes cost just about $2000. These bikes are generally composed of a custom built frames (geometry, tubing, and design are meticulously selected for intended use and personal preferences), Custom wheels (hubs, spokes, wheels, and tire are bought individually, then assembled), and a motley of other durable, weight efficient, parts. If you know anything about cycling, you would know that this is a phenomenal deal for a 19lb bike that is virtually indestructible (In the right hands).
On the other hand, for a 10 year old, that isn't fully grown, that may not even be interested in bmx come a year from when you get him the bike... It is understandable that you wouldn't want to go straight to the top shelf.
Luckily, you get what you pay for in BMX. For $300 you will get your kid on a bike that has reflectors, a kickstand, a chain guard, and a frame made of a material that is comparable to tin foil that is so heavy your husband will have to pick it up using two hands. On the bright side... your kid will likely give up on bmx, out of frustration due to the bike being broken after a solid two weeks of actual riding.
For $500 your kid will get a VERY respectable entry level bike. Due to your childs age, it is unlikely that he will be able to destroy the bike before the next present worthy occasion (birthday, Christmas, good grades, excessive chore doing). When such a time comes, if the kid hasn't destroyed a part from riding (obviously from not riding), you could propose to sell it for $150 less than you got it for.
Here is the best Idea of all. Get a bike for around $450 on line.

What all these bikes have in common is that they are the least expensive full cromo set ups each brand offers.
Lets be clear on this fact: ALL OF THESE BIKES ARE GOING TO BRAKE
That fact aside, these bikes are very respectable. (More so than that you would get for $300) They are all designed to be upgraded. Once the cheep complete parts brake you will be able to step up the strength of the bike with a replacement part. The fact that the bike is mostly cromo simply means that you will have a little more time to save up some money to buy some new wheels, or a new frame and fork before things get sketchy. When things get sketchy, your kids health is at greater risk.
