Charles Darwin's Theory of Evolution and Natural Selection?

So apparently, I can't quite get the difference between evolution and natural selection, and perhaps other forms of evolution, or which contribute to evolution. What is the fundamental difference?

Also, which is right:

Process Example

Evolution Mountain tigers develop a thicker layer of fur in response to falling temperatures

Natural Selection Weaker young elephants die due to lack of food, leaving a stronger population

Thanks, in advance

Evolution is the process of speciation (two species with a common ancestor become different enough from that ancestor and each other to be called different species).

Natural selection is the method.

Natural Selection = Mountain tigers with thin fur die of cold, leaving the thick furred tigers to populate the area.
Evolution = The population of Mountain Tigers become a separate species from the lowland tigers.

While starvation can select against creatures, there has to be a mechanism to select for or against for evolution to occur. What trait could make a creature survive starvation? Without such a trait, a famine serves only to prevent overpopulation.
