How do you prolong lithium ion battery life?

Aging of lithium-ion is an issue that is often ignored. A lithium-ion battery in use typically lasts between 2-3 years. The capacity loss manifests itself in increased internal resistance caused by oxidation.

Oxidation is a problem with electrochemical surfaces that is not generally solvable. Adding an antioxidant or reducing agent will also interfere with the cell functioning.

Generally speaking, battery life can be extended by not getting anywhere close to the anodic stripping potential.

In practical terms, the battery should not be recharged until it is nearly expended. The battery should not by recharged while the device is on.
