is it possible to put a 5th element shock with an eye 2 eye of 8 inches on a bike that has a 7 inch eye 2 eye?

i have a raleigh chill and i broke the rear suspension and is it possible to put a fifth element shock with 8.5 inches eye to eye on my bike where it has 7.2 inches eye to eye? can i downsize the shock or make my eye 2 eye bigger?

-If your bike came stock with a 7.2inch rear shock, replacing it with a 8.5inch will negatively change a few things on your bike. First the bike was designed to use a 7.2inch long shock, so replacing it with an over 1 inch difference shock will put a load on the rear suspension parts that might cause failure when you least expect it. That 1inch plus difference in shock length will make a drastic change in the bike frames geometry! This will really jack up your Bottom Bracket height and standover. Your headtube angle will also be soo steep (straight up and down with no rake) your bike will be unstable and over-steer at higher speeds.

-You could mount the shock, if your frame will separate wide enough without topping out, depending on the design of your suspension. And drilling another hole to make the shock fit is also not a good idea unless you have done your mechanical engineering research and determined the optimum shock eye placement.

-I would mount only the correct shock with the right shock length for your bike if I were you. The bike will perform the way it was designed and you wont have to worry about your bike breaking or washing out when you ride. Just my opinion, good luck!
