Fisher Tassajara
How do you add air to a Rock Shox Pilot XC fork?
I have a 2003 gary fisher tassajara that i just got and it has a rock shox pilot xc fork. It has zero air in it and i need to add some but it is quite difficult with a normal schrader valved bike pump, any help here? Do I really need to use a shock pump for this? I only need like 20 psi in the fork.
Also is it possible to change the oil in the fork easily?
I have located where to add air and have tried it with a regular bike pump but have been unsuccessful. On the for it has ride weights and recommended psi settings. For this pilot XC fork it says according to Rock Shox that 20 psi is the max. So the only way to get air in there is via a shock pump them? Is it possible to buy a fitting or something for my pump? I have a wrench force air daddy which probably one of the nicest pumps you can buy and would like to adapt that for it if possible.
Yep...you need a shock pump. The heads are smaller on them so they can access the valve, and they won't leak air when you detach them. There's no way to make your tire pump work for suspension because of that second reason. They only cost $20-$40, but you might be able to find one for cheap at your bike shop if they have some "left-outs" from bikes they sold or forks that came in.
I had a dual-air Pilot for awhile and if I remember correctly I put about 30psi in the negative chamber and 90psi in the positive. That set it up a little stiff, but with dual air you can really adjust the feel to how you want it. If you have the solo air, you'll want anywhere from 70-120psi. Go to their website and you can look at the .pdf manuals where it will explain the proper way to set them up with sag, compression and rebound. It will also list the min/max pressure ranges.
Changing the oil is fairly easy but you have to know what you're doing. They should have a service instruction .pdf on the site or you can get it done fairly cheaply at most bike shops. I'd suggest that you watch someone do it the first time before you dive into your fork on your own.
Hope this helps...good luck!
