why doesnt the brake lever on my bmx bike spring back when i let it go?
ok so i was ridin around my street yesterday and i went to pull on my brake lever and it braked but when i let it go it just stayed there. why is that and how can i fix it?
Does your brake itself spring back, or do you have to pull the brake off of the rim? If they both stay stuck then you might have a problem with your brake caliper joint and/or spring.
If the brake springs back fine but the brake lever doesn't go back up, you probably have too much cable friction. You can test how much friction you have by disconnecting the end of the cable from the brake calipers and giving it a tug. If you can't get the hand lever to move back to its released position, you have friction issues.
This can either be caused by a frayed/rusted cable or a sharp bend in the cable housing (the tube that the brake cable runs through). Trace your brake line and check for any places where the brake cable bends more than about 90 degrees.
If your cable or cable housing is in bad shape and simply unkinking it won't work, I would urge you to replace them. You can buy a $10 replacement kit at Walmart. The one I got recently came with 2 brake cables and 2 shifter cables, with housings for each.
Remember, a brake in good working order will pay for itself when it comes to medical bills.
