Can you help me understand the gears on my Shimano 21-speed Mongoose bicycle, please?
Why do i sometimes need to push down REALLY hard, and sometimes im "Right in the powerband" and sometimes even selecting the SAME GEAR feels different?
I bought a Mongoose "Estes" bike AND another one both 26" Mens frame. Is there some "Trick" to get it to go the fastest, and easiest? Sometimes it feels as though it is resisting me?
Gearing is personal.
Your bike is 3 (front) X 7 (rear)
If you are in the largest front, you should be using the bottom 3 gears (smallest) in the rear.
If you are in the smallest front, you should be in the top 3 gears (largest) in the rear.
If you are in the middle, you can use the entire rear cassette (all 7).
The middle is where you want to spend most of your time.
You should feel as if you are pushing, but not struggling. You should NEVER feel as if you are bouncing.
Too light (bouncy) and you will waste energy
too heavy (struggle) and you will waste energy.
Know before hand. If you see a hill ahead of use, right before you start your accent (or at the very bottom) you should begin to loosen the gears (easier to pedal).
While decending, you should get the bike into a hard gear because when you get to the bottom, the bike is going to be at speed and you will need a hard gear to go! go! go!
Gearing will get easier the more you do it.
