I am looking to start my own race team and I am wondering if there is a way I can raise money to start a race team besides sponership.

What type of racing are you looking at doing? There are a lot of different variables that go into each type. If a stock car is what you're looking at, you will need to spend some time in the pits at the track you plan on racing. Talk to some of the people racing, ask what kind of time and money are involved. Then you can decide which class is right for you.
To answer your second question. Besides saving your own, sponsors are the only way to raise money.
